Geek Confessions: How A Computer Repairman Helped His Store Con Customers Out of $475K

“That big-name computer repair service is pulling the wool over your eyes. I would know – I did the wool-pulling myself”

For two years, I worked in tech support for a major technology store. You know the one. Day after day, I watched people overpay by hundreds of dollars for what should have been fast, simple repairs.

Figuring out what was wrong? $200 bucks.

Actually fixing the problem? $600 PLUS, easy.

Computer “beyond repair”? Better dig deep in those pockets. You’ll have to buy a new one from us.

The “marks” were always the same. Perfectly reasonable people, usually 45 and older, who had purchased devices but had NO IDEA what to do when they slowed down or stopped working – and of course, anyone willing to pay an arm and a leg to get the problem fixed ASAP.

Broken computer by broken computer, we’d read each person the same carefully rehearsed script:

“Hmmm…it looks like we’ll have to take your computer in and run some diagnostics. A representative from the store will call you with a quote once it’s done.”

I roll my eyes a little every time I say those words now.

The truth was…..I wasn’t really trained to diagnose anything!

I didn’t even have a background in computers. Heck, no one in my store did. We were just sales associates from other departments who wanted to move up the pay scale. The managers knew they could count on us to UPSELL customers on all the things they didn’t need (protection plans, setup fees, optimization, etc.).

What we actually did was what you might call “troubleshooting for dummies”:

  1. Pop in a CD loaded with troubleshooting software
  2. If it fails, mark it to be sent out for service
  3. Wait two weeks
  4. Call the customers for pickup

And then we sent them the bill. And we made sure we STUFFED IT.

The Secret No Tech Retailer Wants You To Know

When I first started, it just seemed too easy. Didn’t these people realize we were taking them to the cleaners? Didn’t they care?  Eventually, it hit me:

  1. When it comes to computer repairs, MOST people are CLUELESS
  2. If they don’t REALLY know what’s wrong, they can never know how much $$$ it costs to fix
  3. People will trust your pricing as long as it comes from “AN EXPERT”

The catchy commercials. The special uniforms. The scripted “here’s what I think could be wrong” conversations. We looked like experts, and that was all it took!

The people had really bought the BRAND-NAME BALONEY – hook, line, and sinker!

They say experience is the best teacher, and working there definitely taught me not to trust the pricing I get from repair services. So when my own computer at home suddenly started running slower than molasses in a snowstorm, I didn’t even bother to take it in to my own store to get repaired. I decided to take matters into my own hands – and here’s why you should do the same.

A FAST FIX Without Highway Robbery

I came across a product online called Xtra-PC. It was this big, bold promise that caught my eye:

“Makes your old or slow computer blazing fast again in just minutes!”

According to their website, I could do everything I normally did on my computer 10X FASTER – I just needed to plug in this little USB. I was REALLY skeptical. I worked in a tech store; if this really worked, wouldn’t I have heard about this before?

But hey, I’d give it a shot.

Honestly, after one use I’m impressed. It wasn’t hard to figure out at all. It plugged into my computer’s USB port, like a normal USB. Within seconds, it bypassed my old, slow, operating system and replaced it with easy-to-use, blazing fast Linux! I’d heard about how complex and frustrating Linux installs can be for non-experts – but this was effortless!

I could pull up my documents and my photos faster…surf the internet faster….play music and watch cat videos without lagging…send and receive emails with no problem…I even connected a new printer…NO SWEAT.

I almost forgot to mention the craziest part – I only paid $34.99 for it! (Check out THIS WEBSITE if you want to guarantee that price)

I mean, I basically got a brand new computer for less than the cost of a pair of tennis shoes. I would’ve had to shell out HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS had I taken it to a computer repair place. But that’s not all. Here’s what the manufacturer says about what else it can do:

I can’t say enough how shocked I am about the price. I’m accustomed to charging people at least $200 just for a diagnostic.  But $34.99? For what feels like a completely new computer? It’s nuts. If I were still one of the nerds, I would charge $175 AT THE MINIMUM for a product like this. But hey, maybe that’s just the computer repairman in me talking.
